Aaron Carter (34), former singer and rapper, was found dead in his bathtub at his California home this morning. As of today, his cause of death has not been reported. Carter’s last post on Twitter before his death was directed at Kanye West. “Yo Kanye let’s talk… man to man,” he tweeted.
The former actor was a teenage heartthrob in the 90s. Unfortunately, Carter was already an alcoholic in his teens and became a drug user at only 18-years-old. The “I Want Candy” singer also struggled with his mental health for years and was diagnosed with multiple personality disorder, schizophrenia, and anxiety. His mental health could be attributed to his rise to fame as a young child. In addition, Carter had admitted in the past to being sexually abused by his late sister, Leslie Carter. His brother, Nick – a Backstreet Boys member – had apparently abused him his “whole life” as well.
This summer, Carter talked about his five-year sobriety, which he said was ignored by the media. “Of course, if Demi Lovato accidentally overdoses on opiates, then the next day she is on the cover of Women’s Fitness,” he says. “The media doesn’t want to treat me like that. They want to villainize me. I am coming up on five years being clean and the media doesn’t pay as much attention to it as they should, because I am the living testament to ‘you can do it.'” Carter told the DailyMail.
Carter added that he was often painted in an image that was unlike his character. “I am not how some people try to paint me. If somebody wants to call me a train wreck, well I’ve been a train that’s been wrecked multiple times and derailed by many different things,” he adds. In September, Carter had to check into rehab again to regain custody of his son, Prince. He told The Sun he did not relapse and was working on his triggers. “I haven’t had any relapses or anything like that, it’s just triggers are big right now for me [and] I want my son back,” he said.
Melanie Martin, Carter’s on-again, off-again girlfriend has issued a statement following the sudden announcement of his death, saying that she’s “still in the process of accepting this unfortunate reality.” New Kids on the Block tweeted out a tribute to the late rapper, adding that they were saddened to hear about his passing. “We are shocked and saddened about the sudden passing of Aaron Carter,” the tweet says. “Sending prayers to the Carter family. Rest in peace, Aaron.”
